Not just a spring thing —
a trail for every season

Say "Giheung-gu, Yongin" and most people think of Everland or Bojeong-dong's cafe street first. But somewhere in between, there's a neighborhood called Heungdeok. It's a new town packed with apartment complexes and office buildings, but for a new town, it happens to have unusually well-built walking trails. Among them, Heungdeok Trail is fairly well known among locals as a walking path running right through the heart of the district, alongside the apartment blocks. The problem is that most people only remember this trail during spring cherry blossom season — which means they're only seeing half of what this trail has to offer. I'm Yongi, who's watched over downtown Yongin for 500 years, and today I'll introduce you to a Heungdeok Trail that never gets old, no matter the season.

Four Themed Paths, One Trail Through the Heart of the City

As the name suggests, Heungdeok Trail is built to loop around the Heungdeok district. What sets it apart is that it isn't just one path — it's split into four themed sections. The best known of the four is the Flower Welcome Path (Kkotmaji-gil), where cherry trees and azaleas line both sides come spring, turning the whole neighborhood into a flower-lined walk. The other three themed paths each carry their own mood, so you can walk one section one day and a different one the next, mixing up your route each time. Another big plus is that the path runs right alongside the apartment complexes, making it easy to reach — no need to drive anywhere. If you live in the neighborhood, you can step out in slippers and be on the trail in minutes. The path is well paved, with benches placed along the way, so it's easy to sit down for a breather whenever you need one.

It's Not Just Good in Spring

It's easy to see why most people only associate Heungdeok Trail with spring — the few days when the cherry blossoms and azaleas are in full bloom are genuinely spectacular. But the trail's real appeal is being a walkable urban path all year round. In summer, the trees grown up along both sides of the path cast enough shade that walking here feels far cooler than trudging along bare asphalt under the sun. Once the evening sun softens a bit, it's common to see people who just got off work, or families who just finished dinner, strolling the path in small groups. It's not a major tourist attraction — just a neighborhood trail — but word has quietly gotten around that it's a good spot for a summer evening walk. Plenty of parents show up with kids on bicycles too, so come evening, the trail feels like the neighborhood's living room.

Come fall, the trees shift color and show yet another face, and even in winter, as long as snow hasn't piled up too heavily, it's still a fine trail for a walk. If anything, for people trying to avoid the spring crowds, the off-season can actually be a more relaxed time to walk it. For residents who walk it daily, there's a quiet pleasure in watching the scenery shift with each season. A well-built trail like this has naturally become part of the neighborhood's everyday routine, and for regulars, it doubles as a far easier workout course than a gym.

How Locals Actually Use This Trail

The best times to walk Heungdeok Trail are early morning or around sunset. During the day, even with shade, it can still feel hot, so if you're walking for exercise, mornings or evenings are more comfortable. Walking all four themed paths takes a fair bit of time, so if it's your first visit, don't try to cover everything at once — pick one or two sections instead. The full loop can take over an hour if you take it slow, while a shorter stretch runs about thirty to forty minutes, so just pick a section that fits how you're feeling that day.

It's an easy neighborhood to get around without a car, so even if you don't live in Heungdeok, it's a low-effort stop if you happen to be nearby running errands. The path weaves between apartment complexes, so as long as you keep an eye on the signs, there's little risk of getting lost. You'll also spot the occasional cyclist, and where their route overlaps with walkers, it's good manners for both sides to slow down a bit. Parents pushing strollers, people walking their dogs, office workers strolling home with earbuds in — that mix of everyday life is really what this trail looks like. No big plan needed — just step out after dinner and do one loop, and that's a solid walk on its own.

YONGI's Tip · Even shaded spots can feel warm during the day, so early morning or sunset is the best time to walk. If it's your first visit, don't try to cover all four sections — start with one or two.

It'd be a shame to only come here in spring. Locals close out their day on this trail all year round. One loop after dinner — that's what living in Heungdeok is really about.
