You watch the sunrise
from the highest point

Say "Yongin" and most people think of Everland or the Korean Folk Village first, or maybe the Bojeong-dong cafe street. Everyone's used to the night views good for photos and the lines outside popular restaurants, but not many people can say they've actually watched the sun come up in Yongin. The ones who really know this city already know where to go for that. It's Seokseongsan. No matter where in downtown Yongin you look up, the same ridge is always in view — and yet surprisingly few people have actually hiked to the top. If you ever wake up early and can't decide where to go, this one mountain is enough. I'm Yongi, who's watched over downtown Yongin for 500 years, and I'll walk you through why this mountain is considered Yongin's best sunrise spot.

The Highest Point in Yongin — That's What Makes It the Guardian Mountain

Seokseongsan stands 471.5 meters tall, making it the highest mountain in Yongin. It's not just tall — it's been called Yongin's jinsan, or guardian mountain, since long ago. Jinsan is an old term for the main mountain that stands firmly behind a town, anchoring it — meaning this mountain sits at the very center of the ground on which the city of Yongin was built. That's exactly why the ridge stays in view no matter which direction you look from downtown. Beyond the apartment blocks, at the far end of the road, the same familiar silhouette is always standing there, and Yongin locals often find their bearings by it without even thinking. By height alone it can't compete with the famous mountains of the greater Seoul area, but within the city of Yongin, nothing stands taller — and that alone says something about this mountain's standing.

And yet, surprisingly few people have actually climbed it. Because it's a mountain you see every day, it's oddly easy to never make the time to actually visit. It's a classic case of the thing right under your nose being the one you overlook. Plenty of people pass by it daily without knowing exactly why it's called the guardian mountain, or what you can actually see from the top. But when it comes to sunrise, the story changes completely. People searching for the best place to watch the sun rise in Yongin end up, after all that searching, at this mountain's summit. There's a real reason it's considered Yongin's best sunrise spot. A mountain you'd normally just pass by becomes something special the moment the sun comes up over it — reason enough to make the time to climb it, at least once.

The Summit Where Cheoin-gu, Pogok-eup, and Giheung-gu Meet

Another thing that sets Seokseongsan apart is that it doesn't belong to just one district. The borders of Cheoin-gu, Pogok-eup, and Giheung-gu all meet along its slopes. So whether you live in Suji, Giheung, or over in Cheoin-gu, this mountain never feels that far away no matter where in Yongin you start from. It's not the back mountain of one neighborhood — it's a mountain the whole of Yongin shares, and that's its real charm. That's exactly why it's known as an easy mountain to reach, no matter your starting point.

Being reachable from multiple directions is both an advantage and a source of confusion. Distance and difficulty can vary quite a bit depending on which trailhead you take, so it's worth checking a map app beforehand for whichever entrance is closest to where you live. Exact trail times and surface conditions can shift with the season and recent maintenance, so it's best to build in some buffer based on how you're feeling that day. If it's your first time on a given route, scouting it once in daylight beforehand is also a good option. Still, no matter which side you start from, you end up at the same summit — so worrying less about the route and more about not being late for sunrise is what actually matters.

Why Sunrise, Specifically

The reason Seokseongsan is known for sunrise is actually simple. As the highest point in Yongin, nothing blocks the view once you're standing at the summit. A spot where you can watch, unobstructed, the whole process from the sun first clearing the horizon to the entire sky slowly changing color is rare — and this summit is considered one of the few places that offers exactly that. People say it feels distinctly different from watching sunrise from a low hill or a downtown observation deck. It's also exactly why so many people bring a camera along.

The mood here is also the exact opposite of the downtown viewpoints that get crowded for the night view after sunset. Places packed in the evening are usually quiet at dawn. Climbing a dark mountain trail and standing at the summit to quietly watch the sky slowly brighten, alone or with just a few others, is a sight you can never get during the day. If a dark trail at dawn feels unfamiliar, it's best to climb with company rather than alone. Add the particular stillness of a mountain trail before dawn, and it's easy to see why this mountain is called Yongin's best sunrise spot.

What to Bring Before You Climb

To catch the sunrise, the basic rule is to set out well before the sun actually rises. Factoring in the time it takes to reach the summit, we'd recommend building in a buffer of at least thirty to forty minutes, up to an hour. Since you're climbing in the dark, a light source is a must so you can see your footing, and even in summer, a mountain summit at dawn is noticeably cooler than downtown, so it's worth bringing a light jacket. Light trekking shoes or sneakers are enough, but it's safer to pick something with a sole that won't slip.

🐉 YONGI's checklist
✓A headlamp or flashlight (to check your footing)
✓A light jacket, even in summer
✓Check the sunrise time ahead and leave with plenty of buffer
✓Water or a warm drink if you plan to stay at the summit a while

Once the sun is fully up, there's no reason to rush anymore. On the way down, you can take your time enjoying the now-bright trail, and grabbing breakfast once you're back in the city makes the rest of the day feel noticeably longer than usual. It's a mountain that only rewards the people who actually climb it themselves. That reward alone is why people keep coming back to this mountain, dawn after dawn. If you find yourself waking up early again some other dawn, it's worth trying a different trailhead next time.

YONGI's Tip · It's most accurate to double-check the exact sunrise time and the trailhead closest to your neighborhood on a map app and weather app before you set out. Course-by-course details can change with the season.

That mountain you see every day from downtown Yongin — go climb it, just once, today. Once you've watched the sunrise from up there, you'll understand why everyone ends up heading here.
